George Lucas Ties Knot With Mellody Hobson

First time he's a husband since 1983

George Lucas has never been known to move ahead on something quickly, so it's probably no surprise that the last time the Star Wars creator was married, fans were in line to see "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" for the first time.

But 30 years later, Lucas is married again, this time to long-time girlfriend Mellody Hobson, who he proposed to last January.

The two were married in a small ceremony in Marin County, Calif., in a ceremony that was attended by director Ron Howard, according to The Daily Mail.

Howard, who starred in Lucas' early film "American Graffiti," tweeted that the ceremony was a "joy to behold" and that it was "nothing short of profound."

Although Lucas is now $4 billion richer thanks to the sale last year of the Star Wars franchise to the Walt Disney Co., Hobson is quite successful on her own. She is the president of Ariel Investments, a mutual fund firm out of Chicago. She's also the chair of the board of trustees for the Ariel Investment Trust, and also the chair for DreamWorks Animation SKG.

The 44-year-old is also a director for other larger companies including Estee Lauder, Groupon and Starbucks.

Lucas and Hobson met during a business conference in 2006, and have been nearly inseparable ever since. It's Hobson's first marriage, and Lucas' second. Lucas was married to Marcia Lou Griffin between 1969 and 1983. Griffith is an Oscar-winning film editor who worked on "Star Wars: A New Hope." However, she essentially retired from such work after "Return of the Jedi."

Hobson once told Oprah Winfrey that being open-minded helps build a strong relationship.

"I think we didn't have preconceived ideas about what a partnership should be, and so we allowed ourselves to discover something that was unexpected," Hobson said.
