Box office receipts are off more than 40 percent from last week, but its $36.4 million weekend was just enough for "The Dark Knight Rises" to top the box office for the third week in a row.

"Total Recall," a new adaptation from the Philip K. Dick story that was turned into a blockbuster hit in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger, didn't have the magic of that first film. It opened to $26 million, good enough for second place.

This new version, starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel, was made with a $138 million budget, and will have a long way to go to try and make up that budget at the domestic box office for Columbia Pictures.

The new version just beat the opening weekend of the 1990 film, which took in $25.5 million its first time out. And no, that is not adjusted for inflation. With inflation, the original film opened with $44.8 million. The Schwarzenegger film would go on to earn $119.4 million domestically, more than making up for its $65 million budget. Adjusted for inflation, the first film made $209.6 million. This new film will not reach that level.

Reviews really hurt this film. Of the 124 reviews collected by RottenTomatoes, only 31 percent liked it. A little more than 37,000 people checked in to share their thoughts on the film, and only half of them liked it as well.

With its third week, "The Dark Knight Rises" is now at $354.6 million total in North America. It's about $39 million behind what its 2008 predecessor, "The Dark Knight," did by its third week -- that film just getting ready to cross the $400 million mark by this point. It would go on to make $533.3 million domestically, a bit higher than what "The Dark Knight Rises" is expected to end up.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" fell one place to No. 7 with $4.3 million. That brings its domestic total to $250.6 million after spending a month at the box office. "The Hunger Games" rises slightly to $406.7 million after 136 days. "Snow White & the Huntsman" climbed a little to $153.8 million after two months at the theaters.

No other genre films are still in the box office.

It looks like "Dark Knight Rises" will be No. 1 for just three weeks, as a very busy box office is coming up next weekend with the premiere of the action film "The Bourne Legacy" and the comedy "The Campaign." Jeremy Renner takes over the starring role from Matt Damon, and this film is actually a continuation of the other three, which earned $524.7 million domestically. The third film in that series, "The Bourne Ultimatum," had the best outing in 2007 with $227.2 million.
