If you were to describe progress on a "Battlestar Galactica" big-screen adaptation, "slow" might be the best word.

And for a while, I felt that was perfect. Because to me, the slower a project develops, the less likely it will ever be completed -- especially with someone as busy as director Bryan Singer.

Yet, although the film project is now more than two years old, Singer says he's not only giving up, but he's moving forward. And to be honest, I have changed my position on this from "dread" to "let's give it a shot."

I mean, that what's I (and many other people) asked of Richard Hatch, star of the 1978 series, when the then SciFi Channel said it was creating a re-imagined version of the show. And Hatch followed that advice, and not only supported the new series, but played an amazing regular role as terrorist-turned-politician Tom Zarek.

And even in 2010, Hatch was asking all of us to do the same with Singer's project, but imploring Singer to find balance between both the 1978 version and the one created by Ronald D. Moore.

It looks like Singer is listening. And that's awesome.

"It will exist, I think, quite well between the Glen Larson and Ron Moore universes, but that's all I want to say about it," Singer told IGN earlier this week.

That's Bear McCreary music to my ears. Or should I say Stu Phillips music to my ears?

The worst thing about the re-imagining is that it spent quite a while splitting up the Battlestar Galactica fandom. And I hated that fact. I mean, you couldn't really blame either side. Fans of the original had thought a continuation was underway with Singer pre-Sept. 11, 2001, and was already setting their TiVos to Fox. But they had the carpet pulled out from under them when Singer had to move on from the project, and Universal instead decided to move forward with something different: A re-imagination.

I got caught up in the fan wars at the time, and it was just ... terrible. From both sides. Everyone was passionate about their position, which was great, but sometimes way too passionate. Even me.

But if Singer is going to move forward with this project, I hope it is something that both sides of fandom can enjoy -- and maybe pull in new fans as well. I would love to see a film project that would not only ignite interest in the 1978 series, but the 2003 series, too. Where maybe Starbuck turns back into a guy, but where Col. Tigh is played by a one-eyed Michael Hogan. Where Adama becomes a spiritual leader again, but there is a Laura Roslin ready to share the leadership role. Where Cylon Centurions become even more bad-ass, but maybe some of them do look like sexy models.

Just please don't bring back Muffit II. Please. I beg you.

So I am willing to move and give this film project a chance, and see what Singer can come up with. It would be great if this was one case where it didn't happen before, and it won't happen again. And who knows, maybe it is time that Battlestar Galactica conquered movie theaters.
