Nexus Media Group Inc. is looking for a few good fans who want to translate their fandom into words read by thousands of other people every day.

Airlock Alpha, the science-fiction entertainment news and analysis site of the GenreNexus, is looking for a few writers to join both its news, reviews and columnist staff beginning this summer.

Do you have what it takes? There's only one way to find out, and that's to apply!

But we have to let you know of a few things upfront.

First, whenever we do an open call for writers, we literally get hundreds of submissions, so don't be sad if you don't get chosen. We have people who apply every single time, and trust me, persistence pays off!

So when you do apply, don't just send us your name. Tell us why you would like to write for Airlock Alpha, why you think you'd be a great fit for our online family, and share with us some of your writing samples. Previous experience in preferred, but not required.

All of our writing positions are volunteer, but the perqs are great. You have a chance to interview actors and writers, to become a visible member of the genre community, and to see your name at the top of stories that you created!

Airlock Alpha has been a premier news source for science-fiction fans for the last 14 years, most of that time under our old moniker of SyFy Portal (we have no connection to the current Syfy, since we sold our brand to NBC Universal back in 2009).

Writing doesn't take a lot of time, maybe a couple hours every week. And our editors will work with you to help you fine-tune stories and get your thoughts across the best way possible.

Mixed in with our original content are stories sourced to other publications that our readers are interested in. But we don't just provide our readers with the meat and potatoes. Our readers come to Airlock Alpha first because they know they will get the full context of the story, what it means to them (and fandom), and get a piece of our years of combined entertainment journalism experience.

If you don't have published samples, that's OK ... write up a story based on what you're reading online, and let us see what you got!

We are looking to fill slots for news, columnists and reviewers (although you don't have to be in just one category). News writers should be able to look at a breaking story, pull out the main news nugget to share with readers, and be able to pull up necessary context to go with that story, explaining to our readers why that story matters to them.

Columnists write on a regular basis (typically monthly) about various topics, but usually following a main theme involving science-fiction or fantasy. This is a chance to share some of your thoughts and feelings, and bring to light various things that might not necessarily be mentioned in the news pages.

Reviewers take a look at television episodes, and tell readers why each episode was good (or why it was one that should've been thrown back). You have to be willing to work in a very specific format for Airlock Alpha, and be ready to publish a review within 24 hours of an episode airing.
