Panels at San Diego Comic-Con can offer many things -- but how many offer attendees a chance to have a role in an upcoming film project?

"Space Command," the indie science-fiction project from Marc Scott Zicree and Doug Drexler, will give one fan a chance to become an alien in their new production. All they have to do is show up for the Friday evening panel.

"We promised sci-fi fans a new kind of experience when we launched 'Space Command' two months ago," Zicree said in a release. "We're delivering it in spades with this panel, which promises to be an hour unlike any other at Comic-Con."

Zicree will be a part of a panel that includes Drexler, writer Michael Reaves, artist Iain McCaig and actor Doug Jones in Room 5AB at the convention center. The panel starts at 8:30 p.m. PT.

At the panel, Zicree will draw a name from those in attendance, and that person will be invited up to have McCaig -- best known for his art work in the Star Wars and Harry Potter films -- create an alien from their likeness.

"Iain will draw him right there, and then as a totally original alien that will appear in the film," Zicree said. McCaig has already designed some iconic characters including Darth Maul and Queen Amidala in "Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace." He will work on "Space Command" as a creature creator.

Fans will also have a chance to win souvenir posters, T-shirts and other merchandise involved in the film by texting "Space" to 41242 (standard message rates may apply). And for anyone who is in San Diego, but doesn't have a Comic-Con badge, "Space Command" will host a countdown party Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. PT in the Monterrey Ballroom at Embassy Suites. The hotel is located at 601 Pacific Highway, just north of the convention center.

The Kickstart fundraising campaign for the films end just after the start of Comic-Con. To date, more than 2,400 backers have donated just under $178,000. The original goal was $75,000.

"We're all fans of science-fiction, and so like the films, this panel is for the fans," Zicree said. "We want to address the things that are on the minds and tell the stories that matter most to them.

"This is a new kind of sci-fi franchise - not one driven by corporate suits, but one that takes its inspiration from the legions of fans who have long-supported a hopeful vision of the future."
