The CW has found its Beast for its remake of the CBS series "Beauty and the Beast," and this guy looks nothing like Ron Perlman.

Jay Ryan, who most recently appeared in the Fox series "Terra Nova," will star opposite "Smallville's" Kristin Kreuk in the pilot, which will follow in the footsteps of "90210" and the short-lived "Melrose Place" as nostalgic remakes of 1980s shows on the netlet.

Ryan, 30, played Curran in "Terra Nova," a soldier who went bad and was banished from the Terra Nova camp. He appeared in three episodes of the series. He has also appeared in the Australian drama " Offspring" and the New Zealand drama "Go Girls" in recent years, as well as making a guest appearance in the 2010 "Legend of the Seeker" episode "Eternity" as Alistair.

Much of Ryan's work has been centered around Australian productions ("Terra Nova" is an American series, but was shot in Australia), and his resume also includes "Young Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." He appeared in those shows as Jay Bunyan, his real name. He changed it to "Ryan" through his interest to move into more mainstream acting in Los Angeles.

The CW is still just in the pilot stage for "Beauty and the Beast," but has brought in some of the producers that helped make the show a cult hit for CBS in the late 1980s. That includes Paul Junger Witt, Tony Thomas and series creator Ron Koslow.

The original series starred Perlman and Linda Hamilton in a modern interpretation of the classic fairytale. Kreuk takes on the role of Catherine, who befriends Vincent (the Beast), a military veteran who also was the product of military experimentation.

The CW will announce what shows it intends to pick up for series in May.
