'Terra Nova' Needs Less Dinosaurs, James Earl Jones
Star Jason O'Mara offers his two cents if Fox brings the drama back
With "Alcatraz" putting in a solid second week, prospects for another season of "Terra Nova" are not looking good.
But star Jason O'Mara is an optimist, and already has some ideas on how the show could improve in a Season 2.
"We need to find out who the baddest dude is and bring him into our story," O'Mara, who plays sheriff Jim Shannon in the series, recently told TV Line. In fact, O'Mara suggested that bad guy be played by Darth Vader himself, James Earl Jones, especially since "Alcatraz" already landed perennial bad guy actor Sam Neill.
While a bad guy was introduced late in the first season, it really wasn't one that provoked fear or concern in the eyes of a lot of critics and viewers, and really upping the stakes could go a long way to cementing a strong audience for the show.
But it's not just that. O'Mara thinks there is too much of one thing in the show already: dinosaurs. And the mentality of quantity over quality is really costing the show what could be some serious wow factor when it comes to the special effects.
"When we use dinosaurs, I really hope they're completely kick-ass dinosaurs," he said. "No half-hearted dinosaurs.
"Maybe it's better to have a totally awesome dinosaur in [just] one episode, rather than seeing a dinosaur every episode that isn't quite there."
"Terra Nova" finished the first half of the 2011-12 season as Fox's third highest-rated show behind "The X Factor" and "Bones," according to averages of Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It was ranked No. 11 among new shows for the first half of the season and No. 39 overall with a 4.7 rating/7 share.
Yet, the show's expensive per-episode budget and lower-than-expected performance with audiences has made it a bubble show, waiting to see how other new fare on Fox like J.J. Abrams' "Alcatraz" did. If the first three episodes of that series is any indication, then "Terra Nova" is in some serious trouble. "Alcatraz" is averaging a 5.7/8 after two weeks, ahead of the 5.5 household rating "Terra Nova" found in its first three episodes.
No decision has been made on "Terra Nova's" fate as of yet, but it's expected to come by early February at the latest.
