In what wasn't too big of a surprise, Syfy has now renewed two-thirds of its summer Monday lineup, giving a green light to a Season 2 of "Alphas."

Airlock Alpha reported the pending renewal back in August after Syfy picked up "Warehouse 13" for a fourth season. "Alphas," which is probably best described as "Rubicon" meets "The X-Men," averaged 3.3 million viewers as the leadout to "Warehouse 13" on Mondays.

In fact, according to a release from Syfy, "Alphas" beat out other new and returning cable shows over the summer including "Teen Wolf," "Rescue Me," "Hawthorne," "The Killing" and even "Memphis Beat."

Syfy is ordering 13 more episodes of the show, which are set to air in Summer 2012.

The show's "smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience," said Mark Stern, Syfy's president of original programming, in a release. "From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast led by David Strathairn, we're very proud of what was achieved in its first season, and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season."

"Alphas" is finding success across multiple platforms as well. Its on-demand viewership averages 240,000 plays each week, and it's the most successful digital download from Syfy right now.

The show also stars Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell. The show has included a number of special gusts including Summer Glau, Garret Dillahunt, Lindsay Wagner, Brent Spiner and John Pyper Ferguson.

The series was created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, and is produced in-house by Syfy's Universal Cable Productions.

The renewal is almost a rare gift from Syfy these days. Although it gave a renewal to "Warehouse 13" last month, it also has dropped the ax on shows like "Caprica," "Stargate: Universe," and most recently, "Eureka."

And yes, it's only coincidence that the network that is now using the original name for this website has a series that uses part of the new name for this website. We think.
