Get Ready To Shazam 'Alphas'

Syfy series becomes second one linked to smart phone app

You use it to find out what cool song is playing on the radio, and now you can use it to unlock some additional things behind the scenes of the new Syfy series "Alphas."

Shazam, the smart phone app that can capture the sound of music and tell you exactly what the song is, is making itself available for "Alphas" when it premieres July 11. It will be the second show that Shazam users can point their phones to the screen and capture content following the Syfy version of "Being Human."

Those who use Shazam will be able to access what the network is describing as "exclusive" content, including sneak peeks of upcoming episodes, playlists from the show's soundtrack, and wallpaper for mobile phones. This wallpaper will actually be refreshed each week with another image from that week's episode, as well as all the archived content.

While Shazam is popular on smartphones such as Apple's iPhone or Google's Android-power phones, the app itself has been around a bit longer. The London company actually launched in 2002 for British phone users who could type in a short code into their phone, and then hold their phone up to the music that was playing. That user would then receive a text message on what the song was and who sang it.

The service has expanded quite a bit since then, especially with the rise of smartphones. It's now available not only on iTunes App Store and Android Market, but AT&T's AppCenter, Verizon VCast app store, the Ovi Store by Nokia, Windows Phone Marketplace, BlackBerry App World and GetJar.

The service is currently free for just five tags per month, but those wanting to tag more would have to pay at least $5 for either a one-year subscription or a one-time fee, depending on the service.

"Alphas" stars David Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell.

Get a look at what you can expect on "Alphas" in this sneak peek from Airlock Alpha.

It premieres July 11 at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy.
