The struggling project had originally been set to air July 4
First CG supervisor Doug Drexler posted in his blog that "Virtuality" was alive (although he would later clarify that to say there was no word on a series) but now there seems to be even more life in a possible "Virtuality" series: Fox has moved the airing of the pilot away from a holiday to a Friday night.
New press materials being released by Fox has "Virtuality" airing as its Fox Movie of the Week special airing June 26 at 8 p.m. ET. that's a huge change from the originally reported scheduled airing on July 4 -- a Saturday and a holiday which likely would mean almost no viewers.
The pilot was developed by Ronald D. Moore and Michael Taylor, who both have roots in the Star Trek series as well as SciFi Channel's hit series "Battlestar Galactica." It stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who most recently appeared in "New Amsterdam," as Cmdr. Frank Pike, the head of a space crew embarking on a 10-year journey through space as a way to save an unsustainable Earth. There is one catch, though: The crew is on its own reality show, as a worldwide audience is keeping track of their every move.
As part of the trip, the ship is equipped with virtual reality devices, which end up going "horribly wrong," forcing Pike to make a "crucial decision," according to press materials.
"Virtuality" was not part of Fox's fall schedule, and it's not clear if there are any plans to possibly include it on its mid-season schedule, no matter how the ratings are for the Friday movie. Moore is now involved with "Caprica," the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel series now in production for the SciFi Channel.
"Virtuality" has struggled out of the gate. After the pilot was made, trade publications reported that Fox wanted a number of changes to the show, including a more "mainstreaming" of the concept itself. Some had suggested that would include the elimination of a same-sex married couple that is part of the crew, although that was never confirmed by the network.
If ratings are strong enough for the movie, there is a chance Fox could still consider "Virtuality" for a series, but the network has provided no indication on what exactly it's going to do with the concept beyond airing its pilot June 26.
