Candice Patton will join the cast of The CW’s upcoming series “The Flash,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The CW is wasting no time in capitalizing on the cachet of “Arrow.” Following the continued success of the green-clad archer, and the positive reception of the Barry Allen- centric episodes that aired last fall, the network is moving forward with its plans to launch “The Flash” as its next DC Comics venture.
Given the network’s knack for modern updates of DC-standards, there has been a lot of anticipation and speculation around the new series. At least one of those questions can now be put to rest with the casting of Patton (“The Game”) as Iris West, love interest and — if you go with DC canon — future wife of Barry Allen.
In addition to assuming the mantle of romantic partner to Barry, Iris in the comics is also aunt to Wally West and grandmother to Bart Allen, who both would later serve as incarnations of the hero.
Patton joins castmate Grant Gustin (“Glee”), tasked with filling Allen’s swift shoes, and Jesse L. Martin (“Law & Order”) appearing as her father, Detective West.
The new series is expected to air in the fall. It will open with a stand-alone pilot episode rather than continue from Barry’s appearance on “Arrow,” though details of the initial plot remain hush-hush.
