Future King To Visit ‘Doctor Who’ Set

Prince Charles will help celebrate show’s 50th anniversary

When “Doctor Who” first premiered in November 1963, Prince Charles had just celebrated his 15th birthday. It’s not clear if the young heir to the British throne had actually sat down to watch the show when it first aired. But he is going to make a Royal entrance to the “Doctor Who” set.

Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles, will visit the Tardis and other popular sets when they visit BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff. That has been the home of “Doctor Who” since last year’s Christmas special, which coincidentally, also featured a newly designed Tardis interior set.

The annual visit is designed to promote Wales as well as the country’s charities and projects, according to Digital Spy. The Royal couple will be greeted by an iconic “couple” so to speak, Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman — who play The Doctor and companion Clara Oswald — will greet the two, along with some of their regular co-stars.

“The Prince and The Duchess always enjoy their annual visit to Wales, and this year, they are looking forward to a varied program of engagements,” a spokesman for the couple said. That includes “everything from Dylan Thomas’ Boat House to Doctor Who’s Tardis.”

This would be the second run-in for royalty for Coleman, who joined the show’s as a full-time companion last Christmas. She met Queen Elizabeth II earlier this month at the royal opening of the BBC’s Broadcasting House extension.

“Doctor Who” celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with a special set to air in November. Smith himself will then be leaving his iconic role during the Christmas episode on Dec. 25.
