Marvel Entertainment and online personalized product retailer CafePress are teaming together to offer Marvel-branded goods to fans through a series of new e-commerce portals.
The first portal, launched in conjunction with “Iron Man 3,” is already active. The custom printing and one-off merchandise specialist plans to launch additional portal with branded items in the future for other Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, the Avengers and the X-Men, according to a release.
Marvel itself, of course, already offers a number of products through its Marvel Store which features a variety of superhero-themed products. In fact, some of the prices there may actually be cheaper than what CafePress is offering, at least in a quick comparison by Airlock Alpha.
So why CafePress then? The chief executive officer of the company, Bob Marino, says it’s because the items his company offers is unique. CafePress allows a great amount of customization of its products. For example, fans can purchase an Iron Man T-shirt from the Marvel Store, but may not be able to get that same graphic on a coffee mug or iPhone case — something that CafePress can deliver.
The “Iron Man 3” CafePress portal site can be found here. Portals supporting the upcoming releases of “Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America; The Winter Soldier” will launch Nov. 8 of this year and April 4, 2014 respectively in conjunction with the release dates of those films.
“Iron Man 3,” which opened in the beginning of May, has earned $367.4 million domestically through last weekend.
