Disney Announces More Star Wars Movies

It’s a good time for the galaxy far, far away

With a 16-year span between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Phantom Menace,” fans of the Star Wars universe won’t have to wait nearly as long between movies with Disney at the helm.

An ambitious film release schedule was announced at CinemaCon this week by Alan Horn, Walt Disney Co. chairman. Kicking off in 2015 with the much anticipated J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII, Disney plans to alternate films between the new movies in the Star Wars trilogy with spinoff films drawn from the same universe — every year for the next five years.

The Internet has buzzed with speculation on just what characters and stories will be explored during this reawakening. The consensus seems to be Yoda (who just won the Star Wars This Is Madness tournament) and Boba Fett, the ever-popular bounty hunter.

It’s clear Disney and Lucasfilm Ltd. have committed themselves to the Star Wars cinematic universe. Some have feared the loss of the “Clone Wars” television series and “Star Wars: 1313” video game would leave fans hungry for new content, but it appears Disney intends to keep them well fed.

While the Twitterverse is alive with its usual rancor, fearing Star Wars saturation is too much of a good thing, this news is anything but. The one thing all fans can agree on when interpreting the incredible universe George Lucas created is that there are unlimited stories left to tell, and it looks like the powers that be are intent on sharing them all.

Disney purchased the entire Star Wars franchise late last year for $4 billion. That has essentially removed creator George Lucas from the equation, and has put the franchise in new hands, including “Star Trek: Into Darkness” creator J.J. Abrams.
