The Science Channel scored big ratings with its “Firefly” reunion special.
“Firefly: Browncoats Unite,” the 10th anniversary special, aired Nov. 11, attracting 1.2 million viewers, according to Discovery Communications. The ratings were the highest ever for the network on Sunday night among the 25-54 demographic and earned an overall 0.7 household share.
But the numbers don’t stop with the ratings; according to SocialGuide, “Firefly” garnered 25,000 tweets and 26 million Twitter impressions.
While “Firefly” averaged around 4.5 million viewers halfway through its original run on Fox, scoring Sunday’s numbers 10 years later on a cable outlet illustrates how much support still exists for the genre-favorite.
Of course, if you’re a fan you already know how deep the loyalty runs. Ten thousand fans flocked to the reunion panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July, all waiting in line for hours and some even camping out the night before.
Likewise, the “Firefly” panels at DragonCon stretched down hallways and corridors for half a day, with many fans turned away at the door.
In the end, both the Science Channel and the Browncoat fans were big winners this past weekend. Viewers were treated to an all-day marathon of the series, culminating in the “Firefly: Special Edition” airing of the final two episodes, enhanced with facts and info provided by story-editor Jose Molina.
