Ohio Police Arrest Man Bringing Gun Into ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Had knives and ammunition, but said it was for self-protection

There was just something suspicious about Scott Smith as he was the last to amble into a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in a Westlake, Ohio, theater Saturday night.

The manager at the Regal Cinema peeked into Smith’s bag first, and saw medical supplies. But Smith also caught the attention of an off-duty police officer who followed him into the theater, and made a scary discovery.

Smith allegedly was carrying a 9mm Glock handgun, some ammunition, and several knives, according to The Wrap. Smith reportedly told the officer he was carrying it for his own protection, but he did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Police have yet to charge Smith, but said they found more weapons and ammunition in his home. It’s not clear if he had any criminal intentions besides carrying in a weapon without a permit, but officials are taking a very close look at what those intentions might be in the wake of the Aurora, Colo., shootings two weeks ago that left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

Westlake is a Cleveland suburb near the shore of Lake Erie. It’s home to nearly 33,000 people, and is the hometown of “Lost” scribe Brian K. Vaughan.

James E. Holmes has been formally charged in the Aurora shootings with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder. He’s also been charged with possession of explosive devices and inciting violence. The 24 counts of murder include two charges for each victim killed, one for “murder with deliberation” and the other for “murder with extreme indifference.”

It’s still not clear how much the shootings have affected ticket sales to “The Dark Knight Rises.” As of Monday, it has earned $358.7 million at the domestic box office, and remains several million dollars behind its predecessor, 2008’s “The Dark Knight.”

Smith is not talking to authorities, according to Britain’s Daily Mail. The newspaper also reports he has a wife and young daughter, spent a short time in the military, and has no criminal record.
