Azita Ghanizada Makes Science Fun On ‘Alphas’

PLUS: Find out how she consoled guest star Sean Astin

Rachel Pirzad may have super-sight on Syfy’s Monday series “Alphas,” but sadly the actress who plays her doesn’t. So if Azita Ghanizada was to ever pick an ability she could take home from the set each day, it would be that sight — especially since so many close-ups require her to take out her contact lenses.

Ghanizada is part of the ensemble cast that makes up “Alphas,” which is now part way into its second season. And she says there’s still a lot to look forward to, especially now that new showrunner Bruce Miller is on board.

“It’s definitely a more serialized show” now, Ghanizada told Airlock Alpha and other news outlets during San Diego Comic-Con last month. “The show is extremely glossy and epic in its first premiere on what’s going on, and how do we get Dr. Rosen back into the real world. How do we get the team together and what is the big story that we’re fighting.

“The shows after the premiere really deal with the human drama. They deal with what we deal as superhumans with these disabilities, or abilities that make us feel awkward or socially out of place, and see them come around it in a different way,” she said. “I hear the episodes are a bit sharper and a bit tighter this year.”

One of the biggest changes for Rachel is the fact that she will finally have a boyfriend this season, after finally finding a way to get her super-senses under control. But she’s still a scientist at heart, and making science entertaining has been something Ghanizada has looked forward to this year.

“Being able to explain it to an audience kind of excites me,” she said. “I can have fun with it, and that’s a way to make it fun by getting excited by the science. You have to make it exciting, or [‘Alphas’] just becomes another show with a bunch of information, and that’s not the show we want to do.”

Ghanizada and the cast has welcomed a bunch of guest stars this season, including “Lord of the Rings” star Sean Astin, “NCIS'” Lauren Holly and the return of “Firefly’s” Summer Glau.

To prepare for his role in the second season, Astin caught up with the show’s first season, and rushed over to find Ghanizada at one point to share a touching moment he had watching the show.

“He had just watched most of the episodes,” Ghanizada said. “He said, ‘I have daughters, and when you told your dad that he had cancer, I teared up.'”

Will there be even more tears this year? That’s a good question.

“Alphas” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy, immediately after new episodes of “Warehouse 13.”
