‘Merlin’ To Expand Into Facebook Game

Series will make its American return this winter on Syfy

Syfy has already been showing what it’s like to merge the worlds of television and gaming together with the likes of “Battlestar Galactica” and its upcoming “Defiance” series. But now one of its British imports, “Merlin,” is looking to do a little of the same.

“Merlin,” which will begin airing its fifth season this winter on Syfy, will launch a Facebook game this fall tied directly into the show.

“This is our most ambitious season of ‘Merlin’ both dramatically and technically, taking the characters and the audience into areas we have previously only imagined,” said co-creator and executive producer Johnny Capps in a release issued during San Diego Comic-Con.

Not too many details about the “Merlin” game for Facebook have been released, including who is designing the game. However, producers say that the game will explore the world of Camelot and will be free-to-play. According to a release, the game will combine the “heroism and excitement of the series with a distinctive new art style and the ability to play and fight against enemies with friends, or alone.”

Players will have the chance to customize characters and offer real-time cooperative game play, similar to what a handful of other Facebook games provide.

“We have carefully crafted the game to capture the very essence of the world’s most famous sorcerer,” Sad Imre Jele, creator in chief at Bossa Studios — the company designing the game — in a release. “Players can explore magical lands while adventuring alongside trusty allies in the Crystal Cave, knocking out ferocious Wilddeoren rats or uniting one of their favorite characters like Merlin or Arthur.”

“Merlin” will also get its YouTube channel back with new, enhanced content and exclusive behind-the-scenes clips from the past five seasons.

The series stars Colin Morgan, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby and Bradley James, and gives the wizard’s perspective of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable.

Filming for the fifth season began in March with a 13-episode order, and is filmed in both Wales and France for BBC One in the United Kingdom.

An exact premiere date for Syfy has yet to be set.
