‘Alphas’ Gets Itself A Rudy, Samwise, All In One

Sean Astin among big names coming in Season 2 of Syfy series

He still has his helmet from “Rudy,” a coin from “Goonies” and the feet from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now Sean Astin will be looking for a new souvenir as he is set to make a guest appearance in the new Syfy series “Alphas.”

Astin headlines a long list of popular actors who will be a part of the special power series this season, playing Roland, an alpha who has an absorptive brain. He can basically assume the memories of anyone close to him, and then replay them like a tape recorder, according to a release from Syfy.

The second season picks up eight months following the season finale at the prison facility in Binghamton after Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn) exposed the existence of Alphas to an unsuspecting public. Instead of helping to open these special people up for public support, Rosen instead is discredited and imprisoned by the government. In the meantime, his team has disbanded, and several of them have gone back to their old destructive ways.

Also joining the second season is C. Thomas Howell most recently appeared in “The Amazing Spider-man,” and has had a number of character parts over the years, including a small role in “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” Howell plays Eli Aquino, an intense Alpha with super speed who is bent on revenge.

Lauren Holly will play Sen. Charlotte Burton, a government official with mysterious ties to a member of the Alphas team. Holly most recently spent seven years on the hit CBS series “NCIS.”

Summer Glau of “Firefly” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” fame returns as Skylar Adams, an Alpha who possesses a high IQ and is an electronics mastermind. Also returning is John Pyper-Ferguson as Stanton Parish, the perfect Alpha. He played Tomas Vergis in the “Battlestar Galactica” spinoff “Caprica.”

Joining them is Kathleen Munroe as Dr. Rosen’s daughter, Dani, an empath who can transfer emotions from herself to others (and who is a secret follower of Stanton Parish). Munroe played Amanda Perry in “Stargate: Universe” as well as “Fraudry” in “Haven.”

Mahershala Ali reprises his role as Nathan Clay, the head of the tactical unit within the Department of Defense tasked with dealing with rogue Alphas. Ali — who formerly went by the name Mahershalalhashbaz Ali — played Richard Tyler in “The 4400” as well as Anthony King in “Treme.”

Steve Byers will play John Bennett, a member of the tactical team from the U.S. Department of Defense assigned to the Alphas team. Byers played Heracles in last year’s “Immortals” as well as Desaad in “Smallville.”

“Battlestar Galactica” actress Kandyse McClure will join “Alphas” as Agnes, an attractive but distant Alpha with the ability to see into people’s minds simply by touching them.

Finally, Noah Reid will play Adam Gordon, a young man who is grief-stricken by the death of his young sister, Maggie. However, he becomes convinced she is alive and in need of help. Reid played Walter Spackman in the 2011 Syfy broken pilot “Three Inches.”

Bruce Miller, best known for his work on “Eureka,” will take over as showrunner in the second season. He is joined by Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun, Gene Stein and Michael Karnow.

The series stars Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright, Laura Mennell and Erin Way.

“Alphas” premieres July 23 on Syfy.
