We already know that the Evil Queen, played by Lana Parrilla, in “Once Upon a Time” has a bad father. But what about her mother?
Looks like we’re soon to find out as the popular ABC series has cast Barbara Hershey as the Evil Queen’s mom. Hershey, the Emmy award-winning actress, is set to appear in one episode this season, and has already agreed to appear in two episodes of Season 2. That is, if ABC picks up the show for a second season, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Hershey has a lot of great films and television shows to her credit, but few genre ones. She appeared in an episode of the Roy Thinnes alien drama “The Invasion” in 1968. She also played a maid in a 1983 episode of “Faerie Tale Theatre” called “The Nightingale.”
Although this might not count as too much of a connection, she was romantically involved with Naveen Andrews for more than a decade, ending in 2010. Andrews is best known for his role as Sayid Jarrah in “Lost.”
General audiences probably best know Hershey for roles such as Mary Magdalene in “The Last Temptation of Christ” and as Hillary Whitney Essex in “Beaches,” both in 1988, as well as Erica Sayers in the 2010 critical hit “Black Swan.”
She won an Emmy in 1990 for the CBS television movie “A Killing in a Small Town,” and was nominated again the following year for Showtime’s “Paris Trout.” She was also nominated for an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actress in “The Portrait of a Lady.” That film, based on a novel by Henry James, starred Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich.
In its story, Entertainment Weekly said that a second season, although not yet announced, is a sure thing, noting that it is the “highest-rated new drama” (citing a story from October). While ratings have been strong enough to suggest a second season, it’s not the highest-rated new drama. In fact, through the end of January, that title belongs to CBS’ “Person of Interest,” which has averaged a 7.8 rating/12 share, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co.
The No. 2 new drama is “Person of Interest,” also on CBS, with a 7.5/12. The preview of Fox’s “Touch” would be the third highest-rated drama with a 7.0/11, and “Once” would drop in fourth with a 6.1/9.
When including all new shows, “Once” actually falls to eighth, with the addition of “Off Their Rockers” on NBC, “2 Broke Girls” and “Rob” on CBS, and “The X Factor” on Fox to the list.
“Once” is not even Sunday’s top drama, as advertised by ABC. The show is behind “CSI: Miami” (6.6/11) and “The Good Wife” (6.6/10) on CBS.
“Once Upon a Time” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
