‘Star Trek 2’ May Be Hawaii-Bound

Principal photography expected to start Jan. 15

“Star Trek 2” writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman like Hawaii (see: “Hawaii Five-0”) as does writing partner Damon Lindelof (see: “Lost”).

So why not put Star Trek there as well?

J.J. Abrams is set to put Capt. Kirk and crew back in front of the cameras beginning in Jan. 15 not only on Paramount’s soundstages, but also in various locations throughout both California and Hawaii, reports TrekMovie.

Abrams, who will return to direct his second film in the franchise, has been recently spotted in Hawaii scouting locations for what is suspected to be a “jungle planet” location. He’s also been checking out a museum in Los Angeles that is being best described as a “famous Star Trek location.”

Final work is taking place on the script now, yet little to nothing about it has been leaked out quite yet. The only other reports about the new movie was the possibility of Oscar winner Benicio del Toro joining the cast. However, TrekMovie said there’s no word on any official casting yet outside of the principal actors returning from the first movie.

Production is getting a later start than anyone had anticipated, mostly because of other projects getting in the way of both the writers and the director. Abrams was involved, among other things, in the new Mission: Impossible film with Tom Cruise, but as a producer, not a director. He’s also been working on a new television show, “Alcatraz,” for Fox.

Orci and Kurtzman have been busy on a number of projects, especially television ones, that include the aforementioned “Hawaii Five-0” for CBS and Fox’s “Fringe.”

That has all pushed production back, and has since prompted Paramount Pictures to announce a 2013 tentative release date, instead of 2012 as many had originally suspected.

“Star Trek 2” (which is a working title, and will not be the official name) will feature return appearances by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana among others.
