It’s not very often that The CW can beat out any of the Big Four networks. But this week, they did it twice: Thanks to “Vampire Diaries.”
The blood-sucking drama continues its late fall surge by recording its best audience so far this year, a 2.1 rating/3 share, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. That’s the best “Vampire Diaries” has done since Jan. 27, and allowed it to beat both NBC’s “Chuck” (2.0/3) and Fox’s “Fringe” (1.9/3). In fact, both shows posted lows, although “Fringe” matched a low already set Oct. 7.
“Vampire Diaries” had a weak start this season, premiering to a 1.9 and quickly falling to a 1.6. However, its numbers started to slowly climb through mid-October, and has now averaged a 2.0/3 since Halloween.
ABC is looking like it has grabbed the genre crown this season already with an unexpected winner. While all eyes were pointed to Fox’s “Terra Nova,” “Once Upon a Time” was getting attention only when compared to NBC’s “Grimm.”
Yet, “Once” is television’s best Sunday drama, and is holding on to its audience, earning a 6.6/10 this week. It’s maintaining an Audience Loyalty Index of 93.7, meaning that of all the people who have tuned in to at least one episode of “Once,” 94 percent of them are coming back each and every week.
“Grimm,” however, is not having the same luck. Its numbers Friday dipped to a 3.2/5, marking a 22 percent drop from its premiere. Yet it remains near the middle of the pack when it comes to NBC overall, and is improving on its “Chuck” lead-in by 60 percent.
That might not be enough to save “Grimm,” however, which seems to be a victim of poor scheduling on NBC’s part, despite critics’ delight with the program.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that include both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
