Syfy Denies It’s Looking At ‘The Event’

Creator, however, disagrees, and says it could be a cable miniseries

“The Event” might be cleanly off the NBC schedule. But could it find new life on Syfy?

Many a show has come and gone that fans have begged Syfy to pick up, but could the cable channel have finally caved in on this failed invasion series?

“The Event” creator Nick Wauters along with executive producer Steve Stark say Syfy has been in talks to pick up their show, possibly as a miniseries. While the transfer of a show from network to cable isn’t always successful, NBC was burned a couple years ago when it cancelled “Southland” only to watch it become a cable hit for TNT.

Yet, translating a show from network to cable — especially one as serialized as “The Event” — is difficult. Hoping audiences can pick up where they left off, and that new viewers will be attracted to the updated project is hard to anticipate.

One thing going for the show, however, is that its production company — Universal Media Studios — is in the same corporate family as NBC and Syfy.

It’s not the only show that Syfy could be looking at, according to TV Line. The cable channel also seems to be interested in the Fox broken pilot “Locke & Key,” which comes with an all-star linep that includes “Star Trek” writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman as well as “Sarah Connor Chronicles” showrunner Josh Friedman. However, it’s unclear if any real talks have taken place for that show.

Fans who were excited about Wauters’ and Stark’s statements today may not be so happy come Wednesday evening. Syfy’s Craig Engler, who is the voice of the network on Twitter, told followers that Syfy has “no plans to pick up ‘The Event.'”

“The Event” finished its first and only season with a 3.6 rating/5 share, according to Fast National average overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It was network television’s second highest-rated drama behind ABC’s cancelled “No Ordinary Family.” It finished the season ranked 66th overall.
