Esai Morales Joins ’17th Precinct’

Former ‘Caprica’ and ‘Jericho’ Star will re-unite with Ronald D. Moore

NBC’s magical pilot “17th Precinct” is attracting quite the talent.

Already, “Battlestar Galactica’s” James Callis, Jamie Bamber and Tricia Helfer have signed up for starring roles in the series, as has “The West Wing’s” Stockard Channing, with “Smallville’s” Kristin Kreuk signing for a recurring role.

Now, the series has added another notable name to its line-up … Esai Morales.

“17th Precinct” has been described as an ensemble cop drama with a science-fiction twist, and revolves around crime in a town where magic rules science. According to Deadline, Morales will play Lt. Liam Butterfield, one of the police officers charged with keeping the peace in the enchanted town of Excelsior. Unlike other police departments, the law enforcement in the town has to deal with magically-based crimes that take place.

Morales recently starred in “Caprica,” the short-lived series based on “Battlestar Galactica,” but is perhaps better known as Maj. Beck from CBS’s apocalyptic drama “Jericho.”

Channing will play Mira, a former homicide detective who transfers to the 17th Precinct’s robbery division, with Bamber playing Det. Coalan Longstreet and Kreuk appearing as his wife.

The project is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and has been given a pilot commitment by NBC. Should it go to series, it will likely air in the fall.

The pilot will be directed by Michael Rymer, the man credited for creating the look and style of the new “Battlestar Galactica” series when he directed that pilot back in 2003. He went on to direct 22 episodes of “Battlestar Galactica,” including the first two parts of the series finale, “Daybreak.”
