Lana’s ‘Smallville’ Story Is Complete

Kristin Kreuk sets the record straight on why Lana won’t be back

Everyone is coming back to “Smallville” for its final season … well, almost everyone.

Lana Lang, the love of Clark Kent’s life is curiously absent from the season and last week Kristin Kreuk admitted that she probably won’t even watch the series finale. That statement was met with some harsh criticism from some of the shows followers but now the actress has set the record straight and explained there was nothing sinister behind her words.

“There are many people who are just waiting for me to say something that they can hate me for,” she posted on her Facebook page. “There is no personal reason why I am not watching ‘Smallville’ weekly. Honestly, I never really did. I know people want to make it a drama … but there is really no drama.”

Allison Mack, who has already concluded her limited run on the series, will be making an appearance in the final episode (entitled “Finale”) and Michael Rosenbaum has already completed filming his scenes for the episode. Where is Lana Lang? Well, according to Kreuk there was never an official request for her to appear again in the series.

“I do not believe there was ever a real offer for me to come back — though I am pretty sure that if I showed interest in returning, [showrunners] Kelly [Souders] and Brian [Peterson] would find a way to fit me in.”

With that in mind, Kreuk also said that she is satisfied with the conclusion that Lana achieved when she returned to the series for a Kryptonite-infused arc that culminated in Clark essentially becoming allergic to the love of his high school life.

More than that, Kreuk also believes that bringing Lana into the series for such an appearance would be counter-productive to the series and the remarkable journey that Clark has embarked on without her.

“I may be in the minority, but I thought Lana’s story ended well,” she said. “I liked that she gained inner strength and … had the courage to walk away from Clark, that her commitment to a greater good outweighed her very human desire to be with Clark. That she saw that her love for Clark would never diminish, even if they could not be in the same vicinity. And that if she did not do … the best she could for humanity, that would counter some of the very reasons she loved Clark in the first place.”

“Smallville” returns on April 15 on The CW.
