New Superman Finds His Martha Kent

Diane Lane will guide Clark on his journey to Superman

British actor Henry Cavill was recently announced to be donning the infamous red and blue tights in the latest adaptation of Superman and now casting has been completed on the woman behind the hero … his mother.

Diane Lane has been cast as Martha Kent in the movie, which will be directed by Zack Snyder. And, according to Snyder, the casting of Martha is just as important as the casting of Clark Kent himself.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” Snyder said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

On the small screen, a lot of time has been devoted to the development of that relationship on “Smallville,” with Annette O’Toole recently re-entering the series to provide the motherly influence that was integral in shaping Clark Kent.

Casting is already underway for other roles, including Lois Lane and Jonathan Kent, with rumors circulating that Warner Brothers are also seeking someone to take on the role of Gen. Zod. In the original movies starring Christopher Reeve, Zod was played by Terrence Stamp and the character was also be making a return in “Smallville” when actor Callum Blue concludes his arc on the series.

Who will play the Kryptonian leader this time? Reports suggest that Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen is being sought after for the part despite the fact that he is in the final negotiations to appear in the live action adaptation of “Snow White.”

Superman is scheduled for release in Dec. 2012.
