What is the Event? Answer: delayed.
“The Event” may be among the most talked about freshman shows from the science-fiction genre, but chit-chat alone won’t hold a timeslot. That has led NBC to postpone the return of the series by a week.
The decision to hold off the re-launch of the series following its winter break has apparently been made for scheduling purposes and coincides with the recent announcement that NBC has cut the episode order for its struggling comic-book series “The Cape.”
Originally “The Event” was expected to return on Feb. 28, taking over the timeslot currently held by “The Cape,” however if that was to happen “The Cape” would be left with unaired episodes. With “The Event” now delayed by a week and “The Cape’s” first – and possibly only – season wrapping up in a matter of weeks, the network should be able to make a clean break, possibly from both.
Yet there is a silver lining for fans of “The Event.”
When the series returns on March 7, “The Event” will air as part of a two-hour special that is hoped will help propel the series along and stave off an anticipated cancellation order. While the show isn’t with the Peacock’s lowest rated programs, it is by no means close to the top.
Compared to the 3.5 rating/5 share Fast National overnight ratings average from The Nielsen Co. currently seen by “The Cape,” “The Event” is still doing better, with a 4.2/6 average. However, that was thanks to a strong premiere, with later episodes sinking closer to the 3.5 household rating average. Yet the fate of either has yet to be determined.
In the upcoming episodes, producers have already promised that the key question – what is the event? – will be answered. If there is a second season, it will get a launch from its season finale, taking the show in a different direction, according to reports.
“The Event” returns March 7 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
