Will ‘Chuck’ Have Fifth Season?

Co-creator Chris Fedak seems pretty optimistic

There really never seems to be a time when “Chuck” was not on the bubble.

You heard it all the time, and each year seems to be the year to save the NBC show. But probably not this year.

Now, barely halfway through the fourth season, the guys in charge are actually optimistic about the series having a fifth season. In fact, the spy-dramedy just received an order of 11 more episodes, making it — at 24 episodes — the longest “Chuck” season yet.

“Chuck” co-creator Chris Fedak told GiveMeMyRemote that NBC is “excited to consider the idea of actually doing a fifth season.”

“That’s big news,” he continued. “That’s exciting to us.”

The series’ renewal past the second season is commonly attributed to the fan campaign with Subway — although some saw it merely as a publicity stunt by the network — and it ultimately led to Subway product integration becoming a recognizable part of the series. Who knows what the fans — “a pretty intense bunch,” according to Fedak — will do if this vote of confidence in the show doesn’t result in a Season 5 pick-up?

Fedak has an idea about that one.

“I’ve always had this image of when the ‘Chuck’ fans riot, it’s going to be like the end of a ‘Frankenstein’ movie,” he said

If this ultimately leads to the cancellation of “Chuck,” NBC can’t say Fedak didn’t warn them.

“Chuck,” however, has struggled this season. It’s averaged a 3.3 rating/5 share in Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co., down more than 8 percent from its timeslot last season.

“Chuck” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
