Mystery Surrounds ‘Warehouse 13’s’ Mrs. Frederic

The real question is, will Syfy help viewers solve it?

Who is the mysterious woman that seems to be in charge on Syfy’s “Warehouse 13”? How old is she really? Who is her hairstylist? And is there a Mr. Frederic?

There are a lot of questions about Mrs. Frederic, played by CCH Pounder, but don’t expect to find the answers on “Warehouse 13.” At least not anytime soon.

“I have no clue as I have no idea where she came from [or] where she is going,” Pounder recently told reporters in a conference call that included Airlock Alpha. “Is she human? What is she?” In fact, the actress — who also voiced the Na’vi spiritual leader Moat in the blockbuster film “Avatar” — said the character of Mrs. Frederic is liking getting a blank page that has nothing more than the words “Not to be divulged.”

But that’s what attracted Pounder to the role of Mrs. Frederic in the first place. There is no safety net for her character, no backstory to fall back on, and that can be a bit daunting and scary for an actor. But Pounder said it was time she found a role that would be fun to play, especially one that whenever she appears on screen, viewers know something important is going to happen.

In Season 2’s penultimate episode, “Buried,” Mrs. Frederic has to try something else on for her character: She’s sick, and because of that, she starts spewing information out like a computer. No, not in some robot voice — but actually in some unrecognizable computer language that Claudia, played by Allison Scagliotti, has to figure out.

At the same time, Pete and Myka, played by Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly, get to learn a little more about Mrs. Frederic’s past … by visiting Warehouse 2.

“I’m kind of tickled by the fact that [‘Warehouse 13’] is sort of steeped in history in some way or another, and that kind of steam punk is a huge part of our show,” Pounder said. “I use this computer and to see it in reality is an amazing thing. It is fabulous to look at how they put these keys … [they] look like they’re from the old adding machines and then it’s bronzed over. And this case is completely ornate … I don’t know where we get our talent for our props and the works, but this stuff is gorgeous.”

Also back in the episode was Lindsay Wagner as Dr. Vanessa Calder, a woman Pounder said she had a blast working with.

But much like Wagner and a famous alter ego of her own — the Bionic Woman — Pounder says she and Mrs. Frederic have only one thing in common: They both wear glasses.

However, Pounder said she loves to portray strong, authoritative women, even if they can’t be as sensitive as Pounder herself would be, like when she lost her bodyguard in the opening minutes of the Season 2 premiere earlier this summer.

While there are plenty of secrets about Mrs. Frederic, there will be some more details about the Regents — the group of ordinary people who make decisions about the Warehouse — in coming episodes, and Pounder already has her own speculations.

“The Regents are ordinary looking people with extraordinary responsibility,” she said. Viewers are going to see a lot more about the Regents “because they are the big decision-makers of Warehouse 13.”
