Tapping Says Leaving ‘Atlantis’ Was ‘Right Decision’

Some fans continue to blame her departure for series fall

It’s hard to keep Amanda Tapping away from the Stargate franchise. But when Syfy gave her, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler the chance to turn a web-based series into a television show, the actress/producer had a tough decision in front of her.

It was 2008, and fans had embraced the full-time return of Samantha Carter onto the “Stargate SG-1” spinoff “Stargate: Atlantis.” Tapping was replacing Torri Higginson, a big move that could either make or break the show that was now airing as Syfy’s only Stargate offering. But her time there would be a short one: A single season, that is.

It was a tough choice Tapping had to make, but not one she regrets.

“Absolutely, it was the right decision,” Tapping told reporters from various news outlets — including Airlock Alpha — at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend. “Had I stayed with ‘Atlantis,’ ‘Sanctuary’ wouldn’t have happened. At least it would’ve been delayed a year, but the momentum would’ve been stopped and we would’ve lost some of our key crew.”

“Atlantis” only survived a single season after that, with “Star Trek: Voyager” alum Robert Picardo taking over. And while the timing may not have been keen, Tapping doesn’t feel she contributed that much in the show’s downfall.

“I don’t think I have that much power,” she said. “Stargate is a huge part of my family, and it is such a big part of my growing up and my career, and I fully recognize how much they contributed to my success, and the success of ‘Sanctuary,’ and giving me the kind of fandom that brings me to a place like Comic-Con.”

While she doesn’t mind dying her hair blonde and putting on the military boots whenever Stargate needs Samantha Carter, but right now, Tapping said it’s Helen Magnus on “Sanctuary” that is calling for her, and who she feels the strongest connection at this point in her life.

“I think Sam was perfect for where I was at in my 30s,” Tapping said. “I’ve said this before, but I don’t feel like I came into my own as a woman really until I was in my 30s. And now I’m ready for Helen. I wasn’t ready for her back then, [but] the timing in my life has been perfect.”

Tapping says that she does enjoy “Stargate: Universe” — the latest offering from the Stargate franchise — even though it is completely different from what has aired before. But that’s a good thing, she said.

“You’re taking a franchise that is so popular and so recognized, and you’re re-inventing the wheel,” Tapping said. “And I think hey done it really well. Plus I really like the cast.”

Both “Sanctuary” and “Stargate: Universe” return this fall on Syfy.
