Syfy Turns Moviemaking Over To Fans

Will partner with IGN on new project that will produce a new fan film

Well, at least fans couldn’t do any worse, right?

If you ever watched a Saturday night original movie on Syfy and thought you could do better, now you’ll have a chance to prove it. Syfy is teaming with IGN to launch a production site, B Movie Mogul, that will allow fans to take on almost every aspect of a film’s creative process — a film that will end up on the cable channel.

The idea is to bring fans through the pitch, writing, and even marketing aspects of filmmaking giving them a perspective on how it’s done, and the level of work and creativity is involved, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We constantly have fans e-mailing with compliments, complaints and questions about our movies, and this is a way of involving the fans in a new way,” said Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of programming and original movies at Syfy.

The 15-month process begins Friday, and begins easily enough with developing a concept. But don’t start preparing those story pitches just yet. Syfy and IGN are taking a more “pick-a-path” style of production, giving those who wish to be involved a choice between an apocalypse story, a creature film set in the Bermuda Triangle, or an alien movie set in Roswell, N.M.

Sadly, Syfy couldn’t help develop anything more original for an ambitious project like this.

The best part for fans is that they will have a chance to be a part of moviemaking. The best part for Syfy? Reaping the financial rewards as it’s likely they will not be sending any residuals to those who helped out.
