James Callis has remained busy since the end of his role as Dr. Gaius Baltar in “Battlestar Galactica,” including an upcoming stint on the ABC series “FlashForward.”
But fans of the Syfy series “Eureka” need to get ready. Callis is slated to be a series regular in the fourth season of the grounded show set in a town filled with geniuses.
“Eureka” production begins this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Callis is ready to go, said Mark Stern, Syfy’s executive vice president of development. Callis will play Dr. Grant in the season that’s expected to premiere July 9.
Grant, according to Syfy, is a former resident of the town whose unexpected return is cause for serious alarm. He’s also expected to create some friction between himself and Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) since he has a romantic interest in Allison Blake, played by Salli Richardson-Whitfield.
Even more, a cataclysmic shift in the story will “turn the lives upside-down” on the show, according to a press release.
Richardson-Whitfield will join co-star Joe Morton as a director this season, which also will include guest stars Jaime Ray Newman and Matt Frewer.
Also starring in “Eureka” are Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston, Niall Matter and Jordon Hinson.
“Eureka” was once Syfy’s top-rated scripted program, but has since been bumped from that spot by “Warehouse 13.” But it doesn’t seem like the excitement is wearing down for Eureka as Season 3 was the show’s highest-rated season yet, according to Syfy. The show averaged 3.2 million viewers each week in Season 3 when it aired on Fridays.
There might be some confusion with fans over how Callis can do both “FlashForward” and “Eureka.” However, according to reports, Callis only had a short-term recurring role in the ABC series when it returns this week, and his production work on that season has already ended.
It will continue that 9 p.m ET timeslot when it returns July 9.
