Bill Paxton may not have had the biggest roles in Hollywood, but he certainly had the most memorable ranging from The Terminator to Apollo 13. But the actor died Saturday following complications from surgery. He was 61.

Paxton’s family announced the news in a statement to CNN and other news outlets.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery. A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department, and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker.

“Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.”

Although Paxton was best known for his film work like Titanic and Aliens, most of his accolades came with television, primarily with the HBO series tackling polygamy Big Love, which earned Paxton three Golden Globe nominations between 2007 and 2010. He earned his first Golden Globe in 1999 for A Bright Shining Lie, a war drama based on the true story of soldier John Paul Vann.
