Even though it seems obvious that the Sharknado franchise is a waning one, Syfy is not letting its foot off the gas pedal for a second as it orders a fifth television film in the series.
Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are back for Sharknado 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as well as a slightly larger budget that will take the production to places like the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Australia.
With much of North America lying in ruins, the rest of the world braces for the inevitable – a global sharknado. Fin Shepard (Ziering) and his family must put a stop to this disaster before Earth is completely obliterated.
The Sharknado franchise is a product of Syfy’s Saturday B-movie lineup, which has generated solid viewership and revenue over the years. The cable channel’s approach is similar to what Michael Bay did with Armageddon in the late 1990s – pick up an eye-catching name, and then create some film around it.
That has allowed Syfy to bring in some of the most eye-catching B-movie names it could create. Like Big Ass Spider or Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda and, of course, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid.
