God only knows when we might see another book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and by “god,” we mean, of course, George R.R. Martin.
But the author behind the hit HBO series Game of Thrones will offer us yet another story from the world of Westeros this October.
But it won’t be a new book. Instead, it will be part of an anthology from an old Martin friend Gardner Dozois called The Book of Swords.
Martin’s story, “The Sons of the Dragon,” comes from the same Westeros backstory as “The Princess and the Queen” in the Dangerous Women anthology as well as “The Rogue Prince” in the Rogues anthology, the author explained on his LiveJournal.
“It’s water from the same well. A history rather than a traditional narrative. A lot of telling, only a little showing. But if you’re fascinated by the politics of Westeros, as many of my readers seem to be, you should enjoy it.”
The book, Martin said, chronicles the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor the Cruel. It was originally intended to be a part of an illustrated concordance Martin was working on called The World of Ice & Fire, which was supposed to include some “sidebars” about the history of Westeros, the world in which Game of Thrones takes place.
