The Shmaltz Brewing Co. of Clifton Park, New York, is celebrating Star Trek’s big year in grand style.

Two officially licensed Star Trek-themed Golden Anniversary Ales will be available over the summer.

First up is Star Trek Golden Anniversary Ale: The Trouble With Tribbles, which will be available this week at the San Diego Comic-Con, and also at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention in August.

The beer, according to a news release, is from the original “Star Trek” episode “The Trouble With Tribbles,” where the Enterprise is called to protect a shipment of a genetically engineered four-lobe grain that is a hybrid of wheat and rye called quadrotriticale. Because we won’t see quadrotriticale for another 250 years, Shmaltz will instead use triticale, which is a modern non-fictional hybrid of wheat and rye.

Drew Schmidt, the lead brewer at Shmaltz, said the Light Carastan malt “gives some residual sweetness in the form of very light toffee.” He also adds a dose of Munich to create a slight bready quality.
