In what will likely be more than what a typical Blu-ray player can handle, both CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures are planning major releases this summer, not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, but also to start the buildup for “Star Trek: Beyond” in July.
CBS will kick it all off first on June 7 when it releases “megapacks” of both “Star Trek: The Original Series” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” on Blu-ray.
Both box sets, which hit store shelves on June 7, are complete series. The original Star trek is 79 episodes on 20 discs in high-definition, marking the first time the series has been available in what CBS calls “new, shelf-friendly packaging.” This is the series that started it all with William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock and Deforest Kelley as Dr. Leonard McCoy.
