Syfy Orders New Seasons For ‘Defiance,’ ‘Dominion’

Network continues with aggressive push for scripted content

Syfy’s science fiction series “Defiance” and the supernatural thriller “Dominion” will return for new seasons.

“Defiance” earns a third season with Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives,” “Caprica”) continuing his role as executive producer and showrunner; Vaun Wilmott (“Sons of Anarchy”) will remain aboard the same post for “Dominion.” Produced by Universal Cable Productions, the two series will air in 2015 with 13-episode seasons.

The series are top cable programs in the Thursday 8-10 p.m. time slot among P25-54s. Both series in most current Live+7 data are averaging 2.7 million total viewers, 1.2 million viewers 18-49 and 1.4 million viewers 25-54.

Depicting the near future, “Defiance” is set on an exotically transformed planet Earth where a newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. The series includes a partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, which has created the first-ever true convergence of television and online gaming.

“Dominion” is based on characters from the 2010 film “Legion,” centering on a post–apocalyptic future after an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged in a war of possession against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, chose to side with humanity and lives with human survivors in the city of Vega. Formerly Las Vegas, the isolated compound is home to two houses vying for control over the people as a rebellious young soldier learns that his destiny holds deep ramifications for the future.

Syfy has recently made an aggressive push for new scripted content, often bypassing the pilot stage. Its upcoming series include “Hunters,” “The Expanse,” “The Magicians,” “Ascension,” “12 Monkeys,” “Killjoys” and the miniseries “Childhood’s End.”
